An eye–brain nutrition lesson for the school season

Reading, homework and screen time ask children to process a large amount of information every day. Learning is not only about concentration: during growth, the eyes and brain also need appropriate everyday nutritional support.

The eyes receive and the brain organizes
When children read or use digital learning tools, the eyes receive the picture while the brain continues to process and organize information. Instead of viewing eye care and brain nutrition separately, start with the complete eye–brain picture and consider whether everyday meals support both areas.

How are DHA, EPA and lutein different?
Start by placing each ingredient in its nutritional role, then consider whether a formula fits your child’s everyday needs.
Brain and retina
DHA
DHA is part of the Omega-3 fatty-acid family and is an important structural component of the brain and retina. During growth, it can be obtained from foods such as fish.
An Omega-3 companion
EPA
EPA and DHA are commonly found in fish oil. Their proportions and formulation roles can differ, so parents can check whether a product is designed around children’s growth-stage needs.
A macular pigment component
Lutein
Lutein can accumulate in the macula and forms part of macular pigment, helping the eyes respond to the everyday light environment.
The goal is not simply to add more nutrients, but to understand your child’s needs first.
03 · Start at the dining table
Is your child’s fish intake consistent and varied?
If your child rarely eats fish, is selective about fish flavours, or regularly reads and uses screens for learning, record one week of eating and eye-use habits before deciding whether additional supplementation may be needed.

Are Omega-3-containing fish eaten consistently, and is the range of foods varied enough?
Eye use
Are breaks planned between reading, homework and screen time?

Are sleep, outdoor activity and the learning schedule kept in balance?

Understand the need before making a choice
